In Brand New Americans, Alexandra Ares brings her poignant style and acute observations about what the American dream means today. Twenty-five-year old Max Smirnov arrives to New York City after a blackout caused by a traumatic event and becomes a new man. A couple of years later, still reeling after a lost love, his life teeters between vagabond and entrepreneur when he meets a new girl.
Navigating between the layers of past they left behind and the uncertain new world, the uprooted European characters in Alexandra Ares’s elegant, touching story "The Other Boy" and award-winning novella "The Other Girl" seek love and a better future, beyond the barriers of tradition and humdrum life.
“Ares’s words are beautiful and poignant, she is talented without showing off and The Other Girl reads like a subtle poem…A gorgeous, delicate, full body work and it is wonderful.”
San Francisco Review of Books
"Ares is a budding author who has a knack for highlighting the neurotic, maladaptive and vulnerable people in New York's vast cavern of possible characters” –Readers Favorite, Starred
“While this is not a traditional story in terms of plot, Ares captivates the reader by creating two people who are realistically flawed and vulnerable in a way that not only provokes sympathy but connects with the reader on a fundamental level.” –US Review of Books
“Classical tome, in a modern narrative,”–Sergiu Pobereznic, author, painter, composer

Love can either feed your soul or poison it…This is a remark Max Smirnov, the main character, makes in the book. My personal impression of Max is he uses alcohol and pot as a type of crutch and he’s a bit confused and floundering. But at the same time he’s loveable and interesting. You want to find out what happens to him. And you wish him the best. You feel like you know him well…and deep down you believe he’ll make it. That makes, Brand New Americans: Stories a page turner, though a subtle one.
Alexandra Ares is a brilliant author. Her writing is unique and fresh. The characters, immigrants in New York City trying to make it and find true love, are three dimensional and fleshed out, realistically imperfect and somewhat naïve.
The writer brings you deep into the story. The descriptions of life in New York are skillful and real, you taste, feel and hear what her characters experience. I feel I must mention that unlike so many writers, Ms. Ares does know how to write in first person. The dialogue is superb, reflecting the individual characters’ voices.
After reading Brand New Americans: Stories, I can certainly understand why Alexandra Ares is an award winning author. I highly recommend Brand New Americans: Stories.

Brand New Americans Stories edition by Alexandra Ares Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Literate, thoughtful, and highly engaging story about Max and Gia, the latter having endured a series of personal disappointments, and the younger, down-on-his-luck Max, who's trying to understand what would make him most fulfilled in the long term. The author creates a lyricism in each character voice, the result is an appealing, poignant look at the joint strength and resolve of two self-proclaimed Americans, for better or worse, and the lonely, unexpected turn life has taken for them both. Highly recommend!
Two stories, one short one novella length, set in New York City about a young man's blunt quest for success and the more elusive quest for a safe oasis in his private life, bound together by a beautiful prose that reminded me a bit of J.S. Fitzgerald. Max and Gia, the two brand new Americans are flawed, adrift, and fascinating, each in their own way. It's refreshing that the book is about here and now, and the anonymous heroes of our time, not about a well-known time in history, or an imaginary America. It is also refreshing that this slim book manages to be deep with none of its characters behaving horribly or committing any atrocities or engaging in creepy sex.
Alexandra Ares writes surprisingly well from the perspective of a man, although she slowly reveals her feminist views. For instance, the fact that even today, in the 21st century, women are still supposed to be more slender and prettier than men, and especially younger, which is still seen as any man’s birthright. Put the cultural shoe in the other foot and everyone gets uncomfortable. The dialog has an important role, especially in the second part, as a mean to explore unsettling circumstances and ideas, a clash between old and new, only that paradoxically here the “fresh” stands for tradition, and the “wise” asks can’t we do it any other way?
While the plot is not traditional and the open-ended narrative shifts from one character to the other, the two stories carried a strong cumulative emotional punch. They touched me at fundamental level. Are you tired of same old two-pound airport blockbusters? Then try this relatively short book unlike anything you’ve read lately.
